The Red House Nursery School is a private nursery school for 2 to 5 year olds, situated in the quiet village of Upton Bishop near Ross-on-Wye in South Herefordshire, England.
Adjacent to The Old Vicarage, The Red House, established since 1997, is run by Mrs Angela Curry and caters for up to 16 children in 4 morning sessions from 9.00am to 12.30pm, Tuesday to Friday.
The Red House is set in 5 acres of gardens and paddocks and the Nursery area itself is separated from the main house and garden, and exists in its own secluded and safe outdoor environment. Nature walks form an important part of our daily activities. They are designed to be informative, educational and adventurous.

A Typical Red House Session
Children thrive on routine; it gives them a feeling of security. Each day in the Red House we have the same familiar structure - register time, singing, snack time and goodbye song. These small parts of the school day offer reassuring predictability and familiarity. The day starts at 9.00 with registration at the log circle in the field and ends at 12.30. There is a mid-morning healthy snack between 10.30 and 11.15, which includes a drink of milk or water and a selection of fruit and vegetables. The forming of friendships are a crucial step to being part of the setting. The friendships are the children's own when formed in a situation away from home. it is these bonds that help the emotional well-being of a child.
"Discussion Time"
It is so important to develop competence in talking and perhaps even more important, in listening. We will discuss exciting issues of the day - birthdays, snow, sunshine, flowers, animals and any new experiences. Conversation will be allowed to flow spontaneously, with thoughts and ideas especially coming from the children. All children are enabled to achieve their full potential. Teachers listen to and respect all children as unique individuals. Children have a thirst for knowledge; as teachers we must be available to feed and support this thirst.
"Classroom Time"
At The Red House we believe in making learning fun. We sound out and blend letters. The pupils enjoy learning sounds and feel excited when they can read a new word. We always reward the smallest achievement with praise. They will write the shapes of the letters as they become familiar with them. In mathematics the children will be sorting into size, shape and colour. They will be counting and matching as well as learning to recognise written numbers up to 10 and their value. In simple practical ways children will be introduced to addition and subtraction. Children's interests are used to enable them to acquire new skills and understanding. Certain activities are used as a starting point, providing a basis for children to expand on their own ideas. Children are taught to be an equal member in the setting, this is a useful lesson to take with them throughout their schooling.
"Outdoor Play"
We became an outdoor Nursery School during 2020 to fulfil the needs of the parents during Covid times. At The Red House we have always believed in outdoor learning, physical outdoor stamina and movement. The outdoor environment provides an appropriate level of challenge for each individual child. We allow pupils to take risks when they feel secure enough in their surroundings to do so. Teachers notice by observation when children need to be challenged or when they need extra help and support. Sometimes the children will be playing in "The Little House", or riding bicycles and other wheeled toys. At other times they will be using bean bags and balls, gaining valuable co-ordination in throwing and catching skills. All natural world opportunities are embraced e.g. the elements, snow, rain, flora and fauna. The children will find out about the natural world - looking at flowers and trees, planting seeds and talking to and observing the many animals at the School including chickens and guinea-pigs. Five acres of gardens and paddock, mean that the children will never have to leave the School for their nature walks. There is ample space within the grounds to provide a safe environment for outside learning during all four seasons.
Arts and Crafts
All children love to express themselves with colours on a large sheet of paper. They can illustrate their feelings and ideas using a variety of materials at our craft table , learning to explore textures, colours and developing hand-to-eye co-ordination using pairs of scissors, paints, crayons and play-doh.
Singing, Poems and Stories
Each day's session will finish with stories or poems and songs.
All these will further enhance listening and participation skills.
Most of all during all of these activities, the children will have a lot of fun
and experience a sense of pleasure and achievement in all that they do.
